SIAM Chapter new semester BBQ 15.10.2025
We are excited to announce the next BBQ organized by the SIAM student chapter on Wednesday, October 15th at 5 PM! The location will be announced soon -- stay tuned!
We’ll provide the essentials for the grill (sausages, cheese, veggies…) and drinks. Feel free to bring your own food or games, but it’s completely optional. To keep things sustainable, please bring your own cup, plate, and utensils if you can.
The event is open to friends, colleagues and partners -- everyone is welcome!
Let’s kick off the new semester together with good food, great company, and a relaxed evening. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
We’ll also be hosting an additional NerdNite in November (date to be announced) — stay tuned!
Seminar: Introduction to Typst, 16.06.2025

The Tools Seminar series continues! This time we are inviting you to an Typst seminar.
Typst is a modern typesetting system designed to be a more user-friendly alternative to LaTeX, offering a simpler syntax and real-time preview capabilities.

If you have never been to the Max Planck Institute: this is the big building next to the Jerusalem-Brücke at tram stop Askanischer Platz. BBQ Event 24.10.2024
We warmly invite you to our BBQ on Thursday, October 24th, starting at 5 p.m., organized by the SIAM Chapter Magdeburg!
UPDATE: We are meeting at the Max Planck Institute (Sandtorstrasse 1, 39106 Magdeburg) !
This time, we’ll be gathering on the lawn across from Building 16 (G16) on the OVGU campus.
There’s plenty of space for delicious food, relaxed conversations, games, and fun – and if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll be able to move inside and enjoy the comfort of the indoor space.
We’ll provide the food (sausages, cheese, veggies…) and drinks. If you’d like, feel free to bring your own food or games – but it’s not necessary. To keep things more sustainable, you can bring your own cups, plates, and utensils.
The event is open to your friends, colleagues, and partners – everyone’s welcome!
To find us, it’s best to follow the directions in the attached image and meet us on the lawn behind the bicycle parking space.
Alternatively, you can use the main entrance, but please note that in some cases, there may be a short wait before someone is available to let you in.
Seminar: Basics of LaTeX, 09.10.2024
Dear Students,
The first free seminar of the Tools Seminar Series
will be held on 09.10.2024 and will cover the basics of LaTeX to help you to get started on creating well-formatted documents for your academic work.Seminar Details:

- Basic LaTeX packages and commands to start a document
- Writing equations and mathematical expressions
- Creating tables and figures (including subfigures)
- And much more!
- Language: English (with support available in German as well)

What to Bring:
- Just bring your laptop – no need to install LaTeX in advance.
- Since we will be using online LaTeX editor Overleaf for the hands-on part of the seminar, we recommend you to register at https://www.overleaf.com/ in advance.
This is a great opportunity to learn together an important tool for preparing professional academic documents, theses, and research papers. Of course, any LaTeX-related questions are welcome, we would be happy to help you and learn with you.

Seminar Prof. Dr.-Ing. Daniel Juhre

On the February 15th at 14:30 Professor Dr.-Ing. Daniel Juhre presented a seminar on "Multiscale Modeling of Filled Elastomers". The venue for this presentation was kindly provided by the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems. Attendees had a valuable opportunity to learn from an expert in advanced material modeling and finite element simulations of complex structures. The seminar was followed by a Q&A session where the participants were able to engage directly with Professor Juhre and connect with students from various engineering disciplines. The Student Chapter of SIAM Magdeburg expresses sincere gratitude to Professor Juhre for sharing his expertise in very insightful presentation and to the Max Planck Institute for hosting the event. |

Nerd Nite 2023
After a far too long break, there is finally a Nerd Nite in Magdeburg again! At Nerd Nite, you can listen to three entertaining yet informative talks in a relaxed atmosphere; true to the motto "it's like the Discovery Channel — with beer!". And just like on the Discovery Channel, all the presentations are in English. Questions are explicitly welcome (also in German).
This time we could win two Magdeburg researchers from the "Polarstern" and the Kicker Syndikat to present these talks:
- Thomas Richter: The erratic and annoying drift of sea ice
- Kicker Syndikat Magdeburg: Is table soccer even a sport?
- Carolin Mehlmann: Sea ice in a changing climate

Naturkundemuseum
We were happy to visit one of the must-see museums in Magdeburg - the Museum of Natural History on Friday, 9/22/2023 at 15:00.
The museum offers a permanent exhibition dedicated to biodiversity and evolution, habitats of Saxony-Anhalt as well as climate change and evolution during the Ice Age. There is also a special exhibition on prehistoric crabs.
The tickets and the guided tour were sponsored by SIAM Chapter. We hope that all the participants had fun and could broaden their scientific horizons

BBQ event
We invite you to a barbeque on Thursday, May 25th, from 5:00 PM held by the SIAM Student Chapter of Magdeburg.
It will take place at the lawn area in front of building 16 (G16) at the OVGU campus,
where we have space to party, eat, and play some games (frisbee,
badminton,... feel free to bring your own game!).
We will provide food (sausages, cheese, veggies,...) and drinks. If you feel like bringing some salad, dessert, or other food/snacks, you are encouraged to do so, but it is not necessary.
In order to have a greener event, you are very welcome to bring your own mug and plate.
You can also bring along your colleagues, friends, or partner. Feel
free to share the information with anyone who might be interested in
the event!

We are happy to announce that the latest election for the Magdeburg SIAM Chapter Officers' Board was completed successfully with 90% positive, 3.3% negative, and 6.7% invalid votes.
After internal discussions, we have decided to allocate the responsibilities as follows,
